Was Canada more or less independent during the Interwar Period?

22 comments:

  1. Canada became more independent during the interwar period. When all of the political, social, and economical advances are added together, it is clear that Canada gained independence during this period. The Paris Peace Conference and League of Nations were the first political advances made by Canada after the war. Canada gained acknowledgement as a nation on an international level due to these two events. After this, the Chanak Crisis and Halibut Treaty brought Canada further away from the British government and closer towards autonomy. The Chanak Crisis was the first time that Canada had blatantly refused sending troops to help Britain when it did not affect Canada itself. Furthermore the Halibut Treaty was the first treaty that Canada made the decision to sign and did sign on its own. Also the Balfour Report and Statute of Westminster proves that Canada gained independence because it granted autonomy to Canada and enabled Canada to make their own foreign policy. Due to this, Canada along with the other British Dominions became considered equal in status to Britain itself. Politically, Canada made great strides away from Britain to being a completely self governing, independent nation. Socially, Canada was beginning to develop a stronger Canadian identity which also contributed to Canada’s independence. The Group of Seven, Hockey Night in Canada, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation all added to the cultural identity that Canada has today. Economically, Canada used to be completely reliant on Britain, however as Canada politically distanced itself from Britain it also economically distanced itself as well. Canada began to get much investment from the world’s economic leader, the United States. While some believe that Canada simply moved from being completely reliant on Britain to completely reliant on the United States, it was still a step toward their own economic independence as it moved away from Britain. Although they did become somewhat reliant on the United States economically, this was because of the massive debt that they were in due to Britain. Once the political independence comes then the economic independence would soon follow especially because they would not have to do everything that Britain tells them to do anymore like send troops to contribute to a problem that does not involve them. It would be easier to gain more economic independence from the United States when Canada was ready because they were by no means controlled politically by the United States as well. Overall, Canada gained independence from the interwar period because originally Canada was heavily reliant politically and economically on Britain but after this period they were politically self sufficient and no longer attached to Britain economically.

  2. Canada became more independent during the interwar period. The events that happened from 1919 to 1936 helped Canada significantly in gaining its independence. The first events were the Paris Peace Conference and gaining a seat in the League of Nations. Canada’s prime minister at the time Robert Borden fought for Canada to have its own seat and signature in the peace conference. The seat in the League of Nations was also fought for by Borden in order for Canada to gain further independence from Britain. Furthermore, the next 2 events that helped gained independence were the 1922 Chanak Crisis and the 1923 Halibut Treaty. In the Chanak Crisis, the British Government asked Canada to send troops to help defend her port of Chanak against Turkish forces. Canadian prime minister Mackenzie King stated that it would take Canadian parliament to decide whether Canada would send troops or not, Britain could not assume that Canada would automatically answer her call. This was the opposite of the event of world war 1 where Canada was forced to go to war immediately because of their ties with Britain. The Halibut Treaty was a treaty signed with the U.S. and Canada regulating the Halibut fishery in the Northern Pacific. This was the first treaty signed by Canada not in the presence of a British official and set a precedent that was later followed by other dominions in international agreements. This also helped Canada gain independence from Britain and remove their ties. This helped not only Canada, but other British dominions became seen as equal in status to Britain itself. Now that Canada had made many great strides away from Britain politically, they could develop their own social identity by introducing things such as Hockey Night in Canada, the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and the Group of Seven. These things all contributed to the cultural identity Canada has to this day. In terms of economy, Canada used to be reliant on Britain however due to the political changes they did , they no longer had to rely on Britain and instead relied on the United States. Some saw this as just relying on a different country but Canada had no choice but to rely on the United States because they were in massive debt because of the War they were tied to with Britain, additionally at the time the United States was the world’s economic leader. Furthermore the United States was in no way in control of Canada politically so it would be much easier for Canada to gain economic independence from them. In Conclusion Canada became more economically, socially and politically independent during the interwar period by separating the political and social ties they had with Britain.

  4. Canada became more independent during the interwar period. As you can see from all of the events that happened between 1919-1936 it is clear that Canada gained independence during this war period. The first couple of events that happened during this war were the Paris Peace Conference, League of Nations, and the Chanak Crisis. These events helped in the making of gaining more independence for Canada. The Paris peace conference, League of Nations, and the Chanak Crisis helped on a political level for the war. The Chanak Crisis was the first time that Canada had blatantly refused sending troops to help Britain when Canada was not being affected itself. The Balfour Report and statue of Westminster prove that Canada gained independence because it granted autonomy to Canada and permitted Canada to make their own policies. These events helped Canada gain more independence in a Political way. Socially Canada was beginning to develop a strong Canadian Identity. Hockey Night in Canada, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and the Group of Seven helped establish the social and cultural identity that Canada has today. Canada used to rely completely on Britain, Canada eventually distanced itself from Britain politically and in that being ended up distancing itself Economically as well. Some think that Canada’s move from being completely reliant on Britain to being completely reliant on the United States was a safe and simple move. The reason they became reliant on the United Sates had to do with the fact that they were in a massive debt due to Britain. Some economic events that contributed to the war are the Halibut treaty, and the investment in Canada. These 2 events were both economic and helped contribute to the economic side of the period. Another event that helped with the economic portion of the interwar period is the Branch Plants. In the end Canada gained independence from the interwar period because they were originally completely dependent on Britain but after this period they were self sufficient and no longer relied on Britain.

  5. Canada became more independent during the interwar period. When we combine all of the political, social and economic advances we can see that Canada has gained independence especially in the political aspect. The first steps to independence were The Paris Peace Conference and the League of Nations in which Prime Minister Robert Borden at the time, got Canada its own seat and gained Canada an independent membership at the League of nations. The Chanak Crisis was one of the first things after the war that got Canada closer to independence, when the British asked Canada to send troops to help defend their port against the Turkish, Canada said that it was up to the Canadian parliament to decide whether Canada would send troops or not and that Britain could not assume that Canada would automatically answer. On 1923 the Halibut treaty, was the first document that Canada signed without the presence of Britain. The Balfour Report and statute of Westminster was another example on how Canada gained more independence because it granted autonomy and gave Canada the right to make their own foreign policy, thanks to this Canada was considered equal to Britain and more independent as a nation. The Vimy ridge battle was one of the things that started developing a stronger Canadian identity. Socially there was lots of things like The group of seven, Hockey night in Canada and the Canadian broadcasting corporation that made Canada's identity in culture stronger. Economically Canada use to depend on Britain only but when they started to become more independent they started looking to the United States. Canada started to invest with the United states. In conclusion Canada eventually became more independent as nation in all aspects!

  6. Canada became more independent during the interwar period. The reasons are because of the events that happened in the time between 1919-1936. The first couple events that happened were the Paris Peace Conference, and League of Nations. Canada gained independence by gaining a seat at the League of Nations. The next event that happened was the Chanak Crisis. Canada refused to send troops to Britain because Canada was not being affected. The Balfour Report and Statue of Westminster gave evidence that Canada gained independence because it granted them with autonomy and also allowed Canada to make their own foreign policies. This gave Canada more independence in a political way. Canada also gained a social identity, the events that helped with that are Hockey Night in Canada, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and the Group of Seven. These also helped develop cultural identity. This helped build Canada’s identity that it has in the present day. Canada used to rely on Britain but they slowly moved away. Canada became reliant on the United States because Canada had huge debt because of Britain. The Halibut Treaty and Canada’s Investment helped with the economic point of view. Another economic help was the Branch Plants. Canada used to rely on Britain a lot, but after this time period they no longer did and therefore Canada became independent during the interwar.

  7. Canada became much more independent during the interwar period, with all of the Social, Economic and Political advances, Canada gained great independence during this time. The League of Nations and The Paris Peace Conference were the first political advances made by Canada after the war. Then when the Chanak Crisis and Halibut Treaty brought Canada away from the British government, and closer towards autonomy. Halibut Treaty was the first treaty that Canada made the decision to sign and did sign on its own. Chanak Crisis was the first time that Canada refused to send troops to help Britain when Canada was not involved. The Balfour Report and Statute of Westminster proves that Canada gained their own independence, and it had granted autonomy to Canada Which allowed Canada to make their own policy’s. Canada and many other British Dominions were considered equals. On a social aspect Canada begun to develop a better Canadian identity this also helped with Canada’s independence. Hockey Night in Canada (HNC), Group of seven, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) made the identity that Canada has today. On an economic aspect Canada relied on Britain for everything. Though Canada tried to politically gain distance between Britain and themselves, they managed to economically distance themself as well. Some people think that Canada was just using Britain until a better option came along, that option was the U.S. When Canada moved away from relying on Britain they gained their own independance. They ended up becoming reliant on the U.S economically, Canada had a massive debt that they had to pay to Britain. On a political aspect Canada made many great attempts away from Britain to become an independent nation. This would mean that Canada will not have to agree with what Britain says and wants anymore. Canada gained their own independence from the interwar period, Canada was extremely dependant economically and politically on Britain, though afterwards they were independent , relied more on themselves and were no longer attached to Britain economically.

  8. During the Interwar Period the social, economic and political advances of Canada made the country become a more independent place. First off, the Canadian Prime Minister Robert Borden fought successfully for Canada to have its own seat and signature at the Paris Peace Conference. Borden also fought successfully to have Canada gain independent membership at the League of Nations. In 1922 the British Government asked Canada to send troops to help defend her port. The Prime Minister Mackenzie King left the decision up to Parliament, and Britain could not assume that Canada would automatically answer. In 1923 Canada signed a fishing treaty with the U.S, and it was the first treaty singed by Canada not in the presence of a British official. The Balfour Report and the Statute of Westminster was another example on how Canada gained independence, because it gave Canada the right to make their own foreign policy as well as granted them autonomy. As a result Canada was considered equal to Britain. Overtime many social aspects made Canada become a more independent country. For example the Group of Seven, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Radio. In the 1920s Branch Plants accrued where Canada started to become more independent, and began trade on the U.S companies. Overall Canada became a more independent Place. No longer relying on Britain, Canada was now a self-sufficient country and independent country.

  9. Canada becoming more independent during the interwar period, Prime Minister Borden took a number of important steps that raised the profile of Canada’s political, social and economical statics to gain independents. Canada 1919 Chanak crisis controlled the Britain and signed at the Paris peace conference and the League of Nations was the first political thing that happened; Canadians gain their own seat and also got their own representative and signature at the Paris peace conference. The Halibut Treaty gain independents when Canada signing the fishing treaty with the U.S without the signature of British representative to sign the treaty, the Halibut treaty was negotiated and signed by independently by the Canada government. The Balfour report and Statute of Westminster the made Canada more independent by being able to make their own foreign policy and began to establish Canadian embassies around the world. the Canadian broadcasting corporation and the group of seven help shaped the culture of Canada being more independent they both French and English due to the influx of U.S influence on Canadian culture. Hockey night in Canada is a radio broadcast and still is broadcasting this day, and help gain the social part of gaining more independent during the interwar period.

  10. Canada became more independent during the interwar period. my reasoning behind this are the events that happened prior to world war I. the first event was the Paris Peace Conference where Prime Minister Robert Borden fought for Canada's independence from Britain and gained membership into the league of nations. In 1922 the British wanted to invade and attack turkey, they asked for canadas assistance in sending troops to war. Makenzie King Prime Minister at the time left the decision into parliaments hands which by the time a decision was made the war was already over. in 1923 Canada and the U.S signed a a fishing treaty, the treaty involved Alaska and British Columbia would share the salmon along the coasts. The Balfour report and the statue of westminister was also a prime example on how canada gained independence, these events granted canada autonomy and gave them the right to make their own foreign policy. The Group of Seven, the canadian broadcasting corporation and radio are among the social aspects that made canada a more independent country. in the 1920's canada and the us began to trade companies calling it Branch Plants. Overall i believe that canada became strongly independent and did not have to rely on Britain as they had to in the past.

  11. Canada was more independent during the inter war period in the following areas: political, economic and social.
Prime Minister Robert Borden and later, Prime Minster Mackenzie King were instrumental in increasing Canada’s political autonomy. At the Paris Peace Conference, Borden got Canada its own seat and signature. Borden also earned Canada more independence at the League of Nations. During the Chanak Crisis, Prime Minster King said that Canadian parliament would decide if Canada should sent troops to defend the British port. In 1926, at the Imperial Conference, the Balfour report stated that Canada was less subordinate to Britain. The King-Byng crisis helped Canadian Prime Minster win the next election because the governor general did not take advice of the Prime Minster and that wasn’t popular with the public. The Statute of Westminster in 1931 gave the details of the Balfour report letting Canada create its own foreign policy and establish Canadian embassies around the world.
Canada became more economically independent from Britain but formed economic ties with the US. In 192, Canada signed the halibut treaty with the US which controlled the halibut fishery in the Northern Pacific. In the 1920s, Britain had a lot of debt from the war and the US was the economic leader of the world. Britain’s investment in Canada decreased while the US increased its investment in Canada. Also in the 1920s the US invested in Canada’s resources with branch plans which gave the US better tariffs.
Canada became more socially independent in the inter war year. In the 1920s and 1930s, Canadian artists, Group of seven, created distinct Canadian art. In 1931, Hockey Night in Canada began with radio announced hockey games, and in 1952 it became televised. In 1936, CBC was created for Canadian culture both in French and English. During the 1930s radio was popular with most homes having one and Canadians preferred the US programs showing a new influence forming in Canada.
During the Inter War period, 1919-1939, Canada became more independent politically, economically and socially.

  12. Canada became more independent during the interwar period. Numerous events throughout 1919 to 1939 helped Canada in gaining its independence. The first events where the Paris Peace Conference and the League of Nations. Canada’s Prime Minister Robert Borden fought with Britain to receive Canada’s own seat in the League of Nations and was able to sign the Paris Peace Conference separately from Britain which helped gained more independence from Britain. In 1922, the British government had asked Canada to send troops to help Britain defend their ports of Chanak against the Turkish forces. The Canadian Prime Minister at the time was Mackenzie King who had told Britain that he would ask the Canadian parliament to help him decide whether to send troops or not. Canada did not have to automatically answer Britain’s call for help like they did in World War I, where Canada was forced to go to war because they had ties with Britain. In 1923 the Halibut Treaty was signed between U.S. and Canada, where they had regulated the halibut fishery in the northern pacific off the coast of British Columbia and Alaska. This had been the first time Canada signed a treaty without the presence of a British official. This had helped Canada gain their own independence away from Britain. Canada had later started to develop their own identity by introducing the Group of Seven, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), and Hockey Night in Canada (HNC). All of these aspects helped Canada gain a better cultural identity. Considering Canada was in debt from World War I, they decided to switch from being reliant only on Britain to being reliant to the United States who was the world’s economic leader. Canada had gained their own independence from the interwar period, and as a result they were less dependent from Britain and more independent economically, socially and politically on themselves.

  13. Canada became much more independent politically, but not as much so economically or socially. Not only did Canada loosen their ties with Britain, but developed an identity along with it. The Paris Peace Conference and League of Nations were the first events showing Canada’s new found independency. Prime Minister Borden fought successfully for a seat and signature on the Treaty of Versailles, and gained a membership at the League of Nations. Another Political accomplishment made by Canadians was the Chanak Crisis, for Britain could not assume that Canada would automatically answer her call. At the 1926 Imperial Conference, the Balfour Report recognized that all British Dominions were now autonomous and their ties with Britain were almost lost completely, including Canada, and in 1931 this became a law under the Statute of Westminster. Canada only became more individualistic. When the Governor General showed to have more power over elected officials chosen by Canadians, Prime Minister Mackenzie King fought an election over the issue. King’s campaign was all to do with self sufficiency and for the Governor General to meet the demands of the Prime Minister; with this campaign he was successful. Although Canada became more politically self reliant, economically and socially was to be the opposite. Moving farther away from Britain’s ways only to move closer to America’s. The Halibut Treaty was a fishing treaty signed with the US, and was also the first treaty signed without presence of a British official. As the United States emerged as the world new economic leader, Canada slowed trades with Britain who accumulated great debt, and continued more trades with United States. Many investments were made between Canada and America, securing the new relationship. US investors started branch plants in Canada that operated on a very large scale. There was also a big social independence that helped Canada grow as a united nation. Hockey night and Radio brought Canadians together for a popular social event. During the Interwar period, Canada’s success and independence flourished.

  14. Canada became more independent during the interwar period. Over the period of 17 years since 1919, a series of affairs related to Canada demonstrated that the autonomy was getting closer to Canadian in political, social, and economic aspects. The first event which told the world the aspiration of Canada to be autonomic is in the 1919 Paris Peace Conference. Borden fought successfully for Canada to have its own seat and signed the Treaty of Versailles. Then in 1920, Canada also gained independent membership at the League of Nations. These two international events help Canada build up the confidence to fight for their independence and against the orders Britain gave. Later on, in the Chanak Crisis, 1922, Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King stated that it would take Parliament to decide whether Canada would send troops or not at the situation that British asked Canada to send troops to help defend her port of Chanak against Turkish forces. Not like the WWI, Canada no longer automatically entered the war which involved with Britain after the Chanak Crisis. Furthermore, Canada signed Halibut Treaty with the U.S. in 1923, and it was the first treaty signed by Canada not in the presence of a British official. At the 1926 Imperial Conference it was acknowledged that Canada was becoming less subordinate to Britain. The following Balfour Report indicated that British dominions were autonomous and that the Canadian Governor General was only a representative of the British monarch, which finally became law in 1931 under the Statute of Westminster. After that, Canada could make their own foreign policy and began to establish Canadian embassies around the world. Those events above mainly affected Canada in politics. Socially, Canada also had some national identifiable progress such as Group of Seven(art), Hockey Night in Canada(1931,sports), and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation(1936, entertainment). All of these developed stronger Canada cultural identity during the interwar period. Canada also economically being less reliant on Britain. Canada used to be completely reliant on Britain, but Canada began to get some investment from American companies in this period. However, many said that Canada was simply transfer the reliant on Britain to the United States. Even so, it was a great step Canada had made to approach the final independence because the biggest creditor for Canada that time was Britain. Once Canada broke away from the dominion of Britain, it would be easy to deal with its economic issues. In short, Canada became more independent during the interwar period because Canada protected their identity from Britain politically, and expanded their national cultural socially, as well as being less reliant on Britain economically after these years.

  15. During the Interwar Period, Canada gained greater political independence from Britain and also became independent from Britain economically. The political, social, and economical events during the Interwar Period, strongly displays Canada’s growing autonomy. The first two events contributing to towards Canada’s autonomy were the Paris Peace Conference and League of Nations. Where, Canada was recognized internationally as an independent nation. The next two events leading towards autonomy were the Chanak Crisis and the Halibut Treaty. The Chanak Crisis involved Britain asking Canada for military reinforcement, for the first time Canada rejected Britain’s request because the issue did not affect Canada directly. In addition, the Halibut Treaty was the first treaty signed solely on Canada’s own decision. Even more independence was gained from the Balfour Report and Statue of Westminster, Canada was granted autonomy and now has the ability to create its own foreign policy. From these events, Canada and other British nations were deemed equal status to Britain. Breaking political ties with Britain, allowed for Canada to become an autonomous nation. The social aspects of Canada created a platform where a strong Canadian identity emerged. The Group of Seven, Hockey Night in Canada, and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation all contributed fair amounts in building Canada’s cultural identity. Canada also underwent significant economic changes. Mainly, Canada took major steps away from being reliant on Britain. Instead, they turn their heads toward the United States for investments, the current world’s economic leaders. To most people, this may not seem like a huge step towards autonomy. However, the United States had no political control over Canada therefore Canada would have easier time becoming fully independent. The Interwar Period was an improvement for Canada’s autonomy, becoming less politically reliant and completely economically independent of Britain.

  16. In my opinion Canada had become more independent during the interwar period. Prime Minister Borden took a numerous steps that raised the profile of Canada’s politically, socially and economically. First of all he fought for Canada's independence from Britain and gained membership into the league of nations. In September of 1922 Great Britain wanted to invade and attack turkey, they asked Canada to assist and send troops, Mackenzie King who was the Prime Minister at the time left the decision into parliaments hands which by the time a decision was made the war had already ended. On March 2, 1923 Canada and The United States sign the halibut treaty which had addressed fishing rights in the north pacific ocean, this was important because it was the first treaty signed by Canada without the presence of a British official. The Balfour report and Statute of Westminster the made Canada more independent by being able to make their own foreign policy and began to establish Canadian as a independent country. Canada had later started to develop their own identity by introducing the Group of Seven, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation , and Hockey Night in Canada, all of these helped Canada gained cultural identity as a independent country. In the 1920's Canada had begun to trade with the united states. rather than lend money to Canadian businessmen U.S. investors establish branch plants to avoid high import taxes. Overall i believe that Canada had become strongly independent and did not depend on Britain socially, economically and politically as they had in the past.

  17. Canada bacome more independent during the inter period. Some events between 1919 to 1939, Canadda experienced gaining more independent with economic, social and political advances. The first several events that happend during First World War were the Paris Peace Congerence and the Chanak Crisis. Canada's Prime Minister Robert Borden fought for Canada's independence from Britain and gained to have its own seat at the league of nations. Also Canada gained their own seat and signature at the Paris Peace Conference. In 1923 Canada signed the Halibut Treat between U.S which controlled the halibut fisher in the Northern Pacific. Canada is autonomous in the Britich Commonwealth of Nations by the Statute of Westminster in 1931. The Dominion of Canada is independent from its colonial powers and this recognized the Balfour Report formally in British law. Prime Minister Mackenzie King refused to send Canadian tropps to Chanak, new independence of action within the British Empir and Commonwealth. WW1 had strongly influenced major Canadian foreign political. The Gropup of Seven, the Canadian broadcasting sorporattion and radio affected the socail that made Canada more independent country. The events tell us Canada had gained their own indenpendence from Britain and becoming more independent politically, economicall and socially.

  18. Canada became more independent politically from Briatin during the interwar period, instead Canada became more dependent on US economically and socially. Canada did gain its indepence during postwar period. Canada was acknowledged as a nation when they first progressed at the Paris Peace Conference and League of Nations. Moreover, Canadians refused to send the troops to lend a hand to Britain in the Chanak Crisis for the first time. This was a one step forward toward the independence. In addition, they had signed the Halibut Treaty without the presence of british officer for the first time. Next, Britain recognized Canada as a nation, granted its autonomy, and signed the balfour Report and built the Statue od Westminister. This had given Canada right to make its own policy. Politically, Canada was definitely advancing and faced Briatin equally. However, Canada started to rely on US' economic abilities. As US' investment operated in Canadian land more and more, Canadian economy started to depend more on US. Even though people started to adapt cultures from US such as first Canadian radio station and hockey night in Canada, most people listened to US radio channel and watched hollywood movies. Therefore, Canada did manage to become independent from Britain, but they got dependent on US more.

  19. During the interwar period, Canada became more independent. Canada gained independence politically, socially, and economically due to the events that happened throughout the years of 1919 to 1936. In 1919, Paris Peace Conference supported Canada to earn a political independence. Prime Minister Borden fought successfully for Canada to have its own seat and signature in the conference. In 1920, League of Nation acted as a political advance as well. Canada gained an independent membership at the League of Nations, which helped the country in preventing wars. Chanak Crisis was one of the first events that took Canadian Parliament to decide on its own. For this event, Canada had to decide whether Canada would send troops or not to help Britain and this brought Canada closer towards Autonomy. Another event was the Halibut Treaty, which was the first treaty signed by Canada not in the presence of a British official. Furthermore the Balfour Report proved that Canada was becoming less subordinate to Britain and acted as one of the main recognition of Canada being autonomous. Statue of Westminster was related politically to the Balfour Report and it recognized the details of the report, which officially granted autonomy, causing Canada to be able to make its own foreign policy. The Group of Seven was an addition to developing Canada as an independent identity and created Canada’s own distinct art. Hockey Night in Canada was included as a social event that supported in creating a cultural identity as well as Canada’s independence. In 1936, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation worked on making a public radio, influencing the social status. All of these events participated in increasing the independence of the country and due to the contributions of these incidents, Canada was able to become more autonomous.

  20. During the Interwar Period Canada became more independent during the interwar period. In 1926 Canada was in the Imperial Conference where they made one of their greatest progresses that would bring them towards their independence. During this time Canada was starting to develop a closer economical and cultural tie with the Americans. During this time Canada's foreign investments had increased 61% for its first time. Due to the increase of foreigners Canada decided to create their own independent church for many French speaking Canadians. In 1920 Canada had gained a greater political independence from the British. The government of Canada was determined to become an independent nation. Canada started to be influenced by the United Kingdom and the United States as they were both independent. In the years the Canadian economy was struggling which lead them to be very depended on its self which lead Canada to its success. After the First World War Canada participated in the Paris Peace Conference. Prime Minister Borden made an important decision which lead to the raising of Canada's international profile, which included the Paris Peace Conference and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. As a end result Canada became more independent during the interwar.
